Small sweetness from the malt flavor to act as the backbone.

Mouthfeel: The body is a thin to medium body, solid carbonation that sings on the tongue, small alcohol warmth.įlavor: Complex hop characteristics, gives small citrus flavor off from hops with some black currant like flavors and a solid touch of pine and a touch of floral/perfumy like flavors, from the bittering to flavoring hop additions. Perfect pale/bronze color.Īroma: Hop forward aroma as expected, but not deep or complex with a light malty sweetness in the background. Sep 01, 2022Īppearance: Clarity is clear, silky head, laces the glass throughout the session and has a long lasting head retention. To me it is more properly called an assertive West Coast IPA, and a great one, and I’ll leave it at that. I can only say that, for my palate and preferences, this lacks in malt character to stand out as an Imperial IPA. Is it a world’s best, or an aging example? I won’t get into that debate. O - I was very glad to finally try this beer after years of hype but not having any opportunities in Florida or in my travels. Very dry finish that leaves the hops aftertaste to linger. Alcohol heat is hard to pick out behind the hops burn. Monstrous hops bitterness level that burns the citrus into your tongue. The beer lacks enough malt to begin to balance against the hops, as I normally expect in the style.į - Medium body and medium to high carbonation. A light touch of bready malt that quickly fades in the surprisingly dry finish. T - Explosion of West Coast hops, with orange and grapefruit citrus notes, along with pine resin. Not overly distinctive nose, but hits the right notes for the style. Nice DIPA aromas of citrus and pine with some sweet, bready malt at a lower level. S - Again the cup may have lessened the impact of the nose, as it was hard for me to get much. Head may have been impeded by the plastic cup. Pure white head started out fluffy and a finger thick, but quickly faded to little more than a ring around the glass. Light golden color with a touch of chill haze. L - Served in a clear plastic Solo cup due to the bar’s location inside a giant food court with outdoor patios. So, there is still a chance to drink Pliny the Younger at many of the brewery’s draft accounts in California, Oregon, Colorado and Philadelphia! Unfortunately bottles will not be available for distribution.Tasted on tap at Native Son Ale house in Rancho Cucamonga, CA. According to the brewery, many of the recommended hotels have confirmed that its special Younger rates will be honored during the new dates.įor those of us not trekking to Sonoma County, draft distribution of Pliny the Younger is still on target to begin reaching the brewery’s wholesalers the week of February 7th. With many visitors traveling from afar, hopefully this is enough notice to alter your travel plans and to stay safe. Therefore, Natalie and Vinnie Cilurzo, co-owners of Russian River Brewing decided it would be best to postpone the highly anticipated release of Pliny the Younger.īarring any additional setbacks, the world’s most popular Triple IPA will see its Santa Rosa and Windsor release on draft and in bottles from March 25 – April 7, 2022. This new health order takes us well into our upcoming Pliny the Younger release. In addition to the brewery’s internal crisis, on January 12th, Sonoma County issued a new health order banning large gatherings and asking residents to stay at home for the next 30 days. It’s a challenge everywhere for breweries to keep their doors open. Earlier this month, Russian River Brewing had to close both locations due to a staffing shortage. With the spike in COVID cases from the Omnicron variant, the brewery has seen its own challenges in keeping its doors open due to its staff becoming sick. Pliny the Younger was brewed for the first time in 2005 as a winter seasonal beer, building upon the Pliny the Elder recipe while pushing the envelope with malt, hops, and alcohol just to see how far they could go! It is always brewed only once a year and released the first Friday in February, rain or shine…. It is loaded with hop flavors, bitterness, and aromatics. The alcohol usually finishes at about 10.25%, although it is remarkably dry for the amount of malt used in this recipe. Pliny the Younger is a Triple IPA, simply meaning that it is higher in alcohol and has tons of hops. Originally set for release at Russian River Brewing in Santa Rosa and Windsor, California on February 4, 2022, the Pliny the Younger release has now been pushed back to Friday, March 25, 2002, continuing through April 7, 2022.

With the hope of returning to an on-premise release of Pliny the Younger at Russian River Brewing, the brewery has decided to postpone the official brewery release by eight weeks.
